Cospicua (formerly called Bormla) was renamed after its (’Conspicuous’) role during the Siege. Most of Cospicua was reduced to rubble during World War II, and the rebuilt suburbs are uninspiring.

Saving graces are Cospicua’s fortifications. Building work began on the ring of the bastions known as the Margherita Lines in 1639, but the construction was interrupted by the decision to start the apparently more urgent Cotonera Lines.

These massive fortifications, stretching for 4.5km, protected the cities on the landward side, though, like so many of the knights’ defences, they were never put to the test. The curtain walls are adorned with richly carved triumphal gateways, the finest of which is the Zabbar Gate on the Zabbar to Cospicua road.

The elaborate Church of the Immaculate Conception (built in 1637) was one of the few buildings to survive the bomb attacks.

There are more than 1,000 places where one can eat and drink out in Malta. The majority are modest, but there are also some fine restaurants that serve ethnic, continental and fad cuisine.

More and more people who travel on holiday don’t want just sun and sea, but like to experience the local culture. One way to find out more about wine and local food specialities is to follow a wine route or visit a few wineries. In many of the established wine producing countries it is easy to join a tour or follow a wine route to find out about the locally produced wines and perhaps try some of the wines. What about Malta? Are there any organised wine tasting tours? Or is there a wine route?

Some of the large tour operators organise wine tasting tours for their guests, so if you are travelling to Malta on a package holiday you may be lucky to be able to sign up for a wine tasting trip as an excursion. If you are travelling independently alone or in a small group, visits need to be arranged by appointment with the wineries.

Distinctly Maltese cuisine is hard to find but does exist. The food eaten draws its influences from Italian cuisine. Most restaurants in resort areas like Sliema cater largely to British tourists, offering pub grub like meat and three veg or bangers and mash, and you have to go a little out of the way to find ‘real’ Maltese food. One of the island’s specialities is rabbit (fenek), and small savoury pastries known as pastizzi are also ubiquitous.

A typical soft drink that originated in Malta is Kinnie, a non-alcoholic fizzy drink made from bitter oranges and slightly reminiscent of Martini. The local beer is called Cisk (pronounced “Chisk”) and, for a premium lager (4.2% by volume), it is very reasonably priced by UK standards. It has a uniquely sweeter taste than most European lagers and is well worth trying.

Three delightfully contrasting islands make up the Maltese Islands. The largest of these, Malta, is sophisticated with a wide variety of superb hotels, excellent beaches and busy nightlife. Comino is the smallest, a haven for anyone who loves watersports, with some of the best swimming in the Mediterranean. And then there is Gozo.

Gozo is a third size of Malta, but greener and more rural. Its lanscape has hills and deep valleys as well as rugged cliffs, which give natural protection to the island’s small harbours and inlets. Life in Gozo moves at a leisurely pace, revolving around farming and fishing. Gozo is an island where time seems to have stood still. There may be de luxe hotels, wonderful small restaurants serving fish caught only hours before being served at the table, and a nightlife in summer to match the very best in Malta but it is all charmingly concealed in a magnificent and truly traquil landscape. Gozo is where you can also get away to secluded privacy when you want to.

Despite the small nature of the island, there is a lot to see in Gozo. Besides the Citadel, and the Ggantija megalithic temples, one finds the equally impressive Inland Sea at Dwejra and Fungus Rock, where the Knights used to collect a fungus they believed to have medicinal properties. Then there is the Azure Window, a stunning break in the rocky shoreline, Ta’ Pinu Basilika which is a centre of pilgrimage, and the new church at Xewkija with one of the world’s largest free-standing domes. There are small pretty villages on the hill tops and secluded places for swimming, and much more. Gozo is an island to be explored.

One of the greatest pleasure when visiting any country is its local cuisine, the food and the wine. In Gozo this is particularly enjoyable because everything sold in the markets or served in its restaurants, is fresh from the fields or the sea. This is, after all, rural and fishing community. The fields are abundant with Mediterranean prouce like green peppers, aubergines and courgettes, and each day a wide variety of fish is brought in to the tiny harbours only an hour or so after the catch.

To go with these are Gozo’s delicious crispy bread as well as Gozo wines are served yound and chilled. For anyone who finds Gozo’s tranquil paradise still a little too hectic, there is nearby Comino, an island only 2sq. km in area, with one hotel. Of course beauty is the Blue Lagoon with its turquoise waters surrounded by a sundrenched coastline.

Gozo, including tiny Comino, is a place to escape to at any time of the year. Even if you are on holiday. Even if you are there for a short visit, it is easy to see why Gozo has become known as undiscovered paradise.

Carnival in Malta today is the same as boisterous excuse for revelry that is has been for centuries. It certainly shows no sign of becoming a dying tradition among the many festas, events and ceremonies that colour a visit to the Maltese islands. Carnival today in Malta is a week of heady activity; a time to join in street processions and enjoy the company neighbours and friends outdoors again after the winter. In a sense, carnival is the first rite of Spring. If you are travelling around Malta and Gozo at carnival time, you are bound at some time to find yourself swept up in a swirling crowd decked out in elaborated masks.

In contrast with ‘Merry Carnival’, Holy Week is solemn and sombre. On these days, the Maltese, like so many others, commemorate the passion, the death and resurrection of Christ. Essentially, the celebrations are of religious character and the Maltese flock to their churches in great numbers. The climax of the ‘Holy Week Celebrations’ is reached on Good Friday afternoon. The Maltese call ‘Good Friday’ ‘Il-Gimgha l-Kbira’ (the most important Friday of the year). This is a day of general mourning: cinemas, places of entertainment and offices are kept closed.

The procession, which starts at about 5pm consists of a number of life-size statues depicting scenes from the passion of Our Lord. Good Friday processions are somewhat long and apart from the statues, about on hundred and fifty participants take part. Some of them are dressed in contemporary costumes re-enacting scenes from the Old Testament and from the Life and Passion of Christ. Others, in fulfilment of a vow, are dressed all in white or grey with a hood covering their faces and carrying wooden crosses.

The feast of Saint Peter and Paul on June 29th marks an important event in the calendar of Maltese popular customs and festivities. Traditionally known as ‘L-Imnarja’, it goes back further to even before the coming of the Knights in 1530 and is essentially a country folk-festival. Following closely the hard toils of harvest time, it made a pleasant break in the dull everyday routine that made up the peasant’s life in the past – a few crowded hours of merrymaking and rustic song amidst a yearly routine of sweat and toil working the land.

There is something unusually captivating about the typical Maltese village feast or “festa”. The incessant pealing of the bells during festa week are not just a summons to an ordinary church service, instead they mark the beginning of five consecutive days of spiritual preparation which whole families flock to, in attendance of the solemn thanksgiving on the morning of the patron saint’s day (usually Sunday).

On the eve of the feast day, a Mass of Thanksgiving is said in the morning. When Mass is over, a hymn of praise is sung which is known as the “Te Deum” from the first words of the Latin hymn “We praise you Lord”. Bouquets of flowers are arranged around the imposing life-size statue of the Patron Saint in a central position in the nave. The statue is, in many instances, beautifully carves in wood. In the evening, the holy relic is carried in procession from a side chapel to the High Altar. Solemn Vespers and Mass conclude the function.

Colourful fireworks are let off on the eve of the feast day normally between 10:00pm and 11:00pm. This particular display is known as “giggifogu” which is a corruption of the Italian “guoco di fuoco”. The Maltese also refer to fireworks in general as “loghob tan-nar” (literally, fire-games), while coloured rockets are known as “murtali tal-kulur”.

On the Feast day a Solemn High Mass is sung in the morning. During this Mass a preacher gives a eulogy on the virtues of the Patron Saint to exhort the faithful to lead a more exemplary life. This oration is known as the panegyric (in Maltese “panigirku”). Solemn Vespers are held again in the evening, and the procession follows. This statue is carried shoulder-high to the accompaniment of brass bands. As the procession winds its way very slowly through the streets, the statue is showered with confetti.

Coloured rockets are let off well into the night. A special display of these takes place as a procession re-enters the church. This is known as the “kaxxa infernali” (a corruption of the Italian “cassa finale” meaning the last box). The Saint’s relic is also carried in procession by a high church dignitary. Those taking part in the procession include various groups of monks, priests wearing richly embroidered church vestments, and the “fratelli” (literally “brothers”), who are lay members of devotional associations (or confraternities). Each group of fratelli is known as “fratellanza”. The members wear colourful robes and they walk behind a huge banner, known as “L-Istandard”, which is the ensign of their group.

But the islands also offer a colourful nightlife.

Admittedly they do not have the variety on offer at larger destinations. For instance, there are very few nightclubs with cabaret acts and the theatre season does not stretch to include the summer months, although open-air music festivals are held between June and September.

Nevertheless, the ’standards’ are all here – discotheques, restaurants, casinos, cinemas, wine and jazz bars, theme evenings, sunset cruises and culture galore in the shoulder months.

Paceville Malta: Nightlife Village

In Malta we have this small town called Paceville, where it consists only of restaurants, hotels, beach, discotheques, bars, cinemas, bowling area, casino, and anything related to entertainment! Everything is located next to each other so it is easily accessible. Most tourists spent their nights in this place, and definitely many sexy maltese women and men.

Malta is quite renowned for the variety of shops found on each part of the island. Be it in the north, south, west, east, in Gozo, anywhere, one will surely be very pleased with the choice of items he had to see as to buy the desired products.

Ta’ Qali Craft Village, Maltese Glass

Amongst other souvenirs, Malta has several glass producers. Most well known are Mdina Glass and Imtarfa Glass. Both can be found at the craft village of Ta Qali. All the workshops are housed in disused aircraft hangars and former military premises.

Open-air Markets, Valletta

Open-air markets are held at Merchants Street in the city of Valletta daily. However Valletta flea market is held only on Sundays. There are more things on sale at Sunday flea market.

Bay Street Shopping, The Trendiest Place to Shop in Malta

A medium sized shopping area set on 3 floors of a purpose built block – there is a hotel within the complex too. All of it under 2 years old. There are several designer shops, an amusement hall, a few restaurants and bars, and the inevitable … McDonalds!

Plaza Shopping Centre, For all your shopping needs

I think that the best fashion shops in Malta are in Sliema, and here, at the Plaza Shopping Centre, the largest shopping centre in Malta, you can find many different shops all under one roof, besides restrooms, a Mc Donalds, a hairdresser and a Chinese Restaurant and a Coffee Shop as well.

Romantic Honeymoon Destinations

The Maltese islands, one of the most romantic and charming destinations in the Mediterranean, provide an ideal setting for the perfect wedding & honeymoon. Blessed with all-year-round sun and set in crystal waters, Malta and its sister island of Gozo and Comino can offer you a unique wedding and honeymoon experience, where complete relaxation can easily give way to one’s urge to discover the islands’ many cultural, artistic and natural treasures.

You will also be pleased to know that a Malta wedding will probably cost you much less than one in your country, or for that matter, in most other Mediterranean destinations! Even the going-away ritual can be a memorable one, whether you do it by using the “karrozzin”, the traditional flower-decorated, Maltese horse-drawn carriage, or the more modern, sleek and comfortable limousine. If your party venue is close to the sea, you can even decide to say goodbye to your guests from a typically Maltese fishing boat!

Getting Married in Malta

Apart from what the islands themselves offer, they offer a wide range of accommodation tailored for your honeymoon requirements. Accommodation varies from apartments, hotels, villas, bungalows and finally farmhouses. Farmhouses are all fully converted to provide modern, self-catering facilities. Many will have private pools set in secluded courtyards. Should you prefer additional amenities, farmhouses annexed to hotels offer as full complement of dining, sporting and social activities.

With the wedding over, all you will be looking forward to will be a few days of utter relaxation, soaking up the Mediterranean pace of life. The island of Malta and Gozo are the perfect location for just idling away the time in the sun and lulled by the sound of the waves, come summer or winter. It will, however, be difficult to resist the temptation to explore their spectacular seascape, ranging from quiet coves and alluring sandy beaches to sheer cliffs.
